The Three Hierarchs (St. John, St. Gregory, St. Basil)

04-The Three Hierarchs (St. John, St. Gregory, St. Basil)
		January 30

Among all the Fathers of the Orthodox
Church, three stand out: Basil the Great, Greg -
ory. The Theologian and John Chrysostom. Each
		one was a great man.

All three were characterized for their high
Education, for the fervor of their faith, tem -
perance, wisdom and their love towar their
		spiritual flock. They distinguished themselves
for their great charity, for their respect of the
values of Greek Letters, and for their struggle
in behalf of Orthodoxy. They also displayed
courage and fearlessness against the powerful
lords, eloquence, and great literary ability.

Each one, however, had his particular char -
acteristics and talents. Basil was the most philo -
sophical; Gregory was the most theological; and
Chrysostom was the most eloquent. Among the
Christians of their day, there began a dispute as
to which of the three was superior. In order that
these disputes cease, the Church sanctioned a
common feast day for all the Three Great Hier -
archs toward the end of the eleventh century.

The Three hierarchs combined fervent Or -
thodox faith with profound Greek education.
That is why they are considered patron saints of
		schools, teachers and Greek Letters.

Their example shows to what heights of
wisdom and virtue a man can be elevated when
he is inspired by the spirit of Christ and the
		Greek spirit.

**I need to know if**

You're my true friend,
Will you be by my
Side until the end?
Can I tell you my secrets deep,
And trust them in your
Heart you'll keep?
I will give you joy and
Many warm smiles,
Can we share that even
Across many miles?
I will not forget what's
important to you,
will you remember what's
important to me too?
No matter how busy I
Will make time for you,
If you are busy will you
Make time for me too?
I will take your hand
And comfort your tears,
Will you hold me and
Soothe my fears?
With you my most
Favorite things I'll share,
If only I know that
You truly care?
If you can accept
Me as I do you,
Then I will know you are a friend most true.
The magical blue roses you
Have been sent ---
Are to let you know
That someone is thinking
Of you…
