St. James is the first bishop of Jerusalem, was not
an Apostle. He is called "Brother of the Lord"
(Adelphotheos) because he was either a son of Joseph
or a son of one of the cousins of Virgin Mary.
He wintnessed one of the appearances of the risen
Lord (Corinth. 15:7). He was also among the Apos -
tles and the Mother of Jesus in the Upper Room
after the Lords ascension waiting for the fulfillment
of His promise (Acts 1:13).
James was distinguished for this warm faith, his
zeal, and his prudence. Therefore, he was regarded
as a person of special authority and because the first
bishop of the Church of Jerusalem. He was also
famous for his austerity and justice for which he was
called "James the Just".
James was the one to whom St. Peter sent news of
his deliverance out of prison (Acts 12:17). He, with
Peter and John received Paul when he came to
Jerusalem after his conversion (Galatians 2:9). He
was one of the main speakers at the Apostolie
Synod (Acts 15:13-22). St. Paul calls Peter, John
and James "pillars" of the Church (Galatians 2:9).
James leading position provoked hatred among
the Jewish leaders, who stoned him to death
(62 A.D.).
St James is held to be the writer: a0 of one of the
General Epistle included in the Canon of the New
Testament, and b) of the first written Divine Litur -
gy of the Church which is performed on his feast
day.
