Following the crowning, the wedding Epistle (Ephesians 5:20-33) and Gospel (john 2:1-11) are read. After the Lord's Prayer, the priest blesses the common cup, offering three sips to both the groom and bride. Originally, Christians marriage was celebrated within the Divine Liturgy. It was the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, which confirmed the couple's union with Christ and one another. Today, the common cup is a distant reminder of that. It is also a symbol of the marriage at Cana, mentioned in the Gospel reading for this sacrament, where our Lord blessed this holy union by His presence and performed His first miracle of changing water into wine. It has also come to symbolize the sharing of the cup of joy and sorrow together in one life, now united and strengthened by common life in Christ.
